Governmental resources that demonstrate why dunes are important

to resilient communities and how they mitigate flooding

Why are Dunes Critical Coastal Protection

  • During Hurricane Sandy (2012), NJ towns with engineered dunes saw markedly less building damage than nearby towns without dunes.

  • Quantitative studies identify dune width and crest height as strong predictors of reduced damage probability.

  • Federal and scientific guidance treats dunes as designable risk‑reduction features that limit overtopping/overwash and lower flood exposure (incl. king tides)
